Authentic

Istrian village with lush vegetation

Krkavče is located in the hinterland of Koper, on a 191-meter-high hill that slopes down on the southern side toward the Dragonja River, the current border between Slovenia and Croatia. The climate is Mediterranean: summers are hot and winters are mild.

Olive trees, grapevines, pomegranates, figs, mulberries, and many other types of fruit trees thrive here. Among the most common tree and shrub species are black oak, cypress, acacia, chestnut, sumac, broom, and others. In addition to high-quality early vegetables, a variety of medicinal plants (garlic, boxwood, wormwood, rue, rosehip, lavender) and herbs (sweet anise, caper, marjoram, basil) also grow. All of this flourishes on the terraced slopes and valleys facing south and west. This landscape is charming, pleasant, and worth visiting in every season.

Colorful

History

Due to its favorable climate and strategic location, various tribes and peoples have settled in this area since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous findings: fragments of well-fired bricks, remains of water channels, collections of Roman-era seals, the Krkavče stone, Glagolitic documents…

The first inhabitants of this area were the Histri, from whom Istria gets its name. They are considered part of the Illyrians. They were followed by the Celts, and later the Greeks were already trading in the area. However, the greatest influence came from the Romans, who began spreading Christianity in the 4th century AD.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Istria came under Frankish rule. In the 8th century, Slavs began settling here. It is believed that during this period, a castle or fortification was built in the Krkavče area. In the 13th century, the village came under Venetian rule, during which it experienced significant development.

Many

Attractions

St. Michael church

Most of the art and historical attractions are located near and inside the church. On the main altar are four marble statues of St. Michael the Archangel, St. Stephen the First Martyr, and the apostles Peter and Paul. In addition to the altars and the tabernacle, another interesting sculpture is the sprinkler with a relief of the Koper coat of arms.

Krkavče stone

The Krkavče Stone is the oldest attraction and landmark of the village. It features a relief image of a human figure, dating back to the 2nd or 1st century BC. It stands at Gradišče above Krkavče, along the path to the hamlet of Škarjevac.

Dragonje Valley

The Dragonja River Valley is one of the most beautiful natural attractions in Slovenian Istria. With its diversity and scenic beauty, it offers endless opportunities for recreation.
